How to Plant & Care for a Sylvester Palm
Our own field guidance for getting a newly delivered palm into the ground and established for the long haul.
Plant As Soon As Possible
Plant your palm as soon as possible after receiving it. If planting has to be delayed, leave the root wrap on and keep the palm in a shady, well-ventilated area until you’re ready to plant.
Digging & Planting Depth
- Dig the hole about twice as wide as the palm’s root system.
- Dig only deep enough to plant the palm at the same depth it was grown — the trunk should sit at ground level and never be buried.
- Backfill with a soil and gravel mix, packing out air pockets as you go.
- Form a soil dam around the base to retain water, then soak the area fully.
Watering Schedule
Water daily or every other day for the first two weeks after planting — never let the soil dry out early on, since this is the most critical establishment period. After the first few months, routine watering becomes less critical as the root system takes hold.
Fertilizing for Long-Term Health
Fertilize in spring, summer, and early fall with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for palms — one containing nitrogen plus manganese, magnesium, potassium, iron, and copper sulfates. Consistent seasonal feeding supports the frond color and trunk growth that make sylvester palms stand out.
