Using Sylvester Palms at a Driveway or Entryway

By Sylvestris Tree Farms · Vero Beach, FL · November 1, 2026

Sylvester palms flanking an estate entrance

A single palm or a matched pair can frame a driveway or entryway with height and rhythm. The right choice depends on your space, the clearance overhead, and how much room the fronds and trunk need. Plan the placement before the palm arrives, and give it room to grow.

Why Palms Work at an Entrance

Palms draw the eye. A tall trunk and a crown of fronds give an entrance a formal, welcoming feel. They also mark the path to the front door. Along a long driveway, a line of palms can create a clear sense of arrival. Near a gate, a pair can signal a planned, balanced space. Think about what you want visitors to notice first when they pull in.

One Palm or a Pair?

A single palm suits a narrow gate, a small front yard, or a spot where you want one strong focal point. A pair works well when you want a balanced look on each side of a gate or door. Matched palms should be close in size and shape so the entrance looks intentional. Before you buy, stand where the palm will go and imagine it at full size. Walk the space and look at it from the street, too.

Clearance for Fronds and Trunk

Palms need room. Fronds spread out wide, and the trunk needs space for air and light. Keep the palm away from walls, fences, sidewalks, and walkways where it can crowd the structure. Look up before you plant. Check for overhead power lines and nearby branches. A palm planted too close to a building can lean, rub, or block the view. Measure the spot, then measure again.

Understanding Palm Sizes

Palm sizes are described in two ways. Overall height is measured from the base to the top of the crown. Clear trunk is the bare trunk below the fronds. Our Sylvester palms range from about 7 feet of overall height up to 9 feet of clear trunk. Some specimens reach over 20 feet overall. Knowing both numbers helps you picture how the palm will look at your entrance and whether it fits your sightline.

Specimen and Florida Fancy Grades

Our palms are graded as specimen and Florida Fancy. The grade helps you compare palms when you choose one for a prominent spot. Ask which grade fits your entrance and your goals. A grade conversation is a good time to talk through the look you want. Bring a photo of the space, and bring your measurements if you have them.

A Simple Placement Checklist

  • Measure the distance to walls, fences, and walkways.
  • Look up for power lines and overhanging branches.
  • Check how the palm will look from the street.
  • Confirm there is room for a crew and equipment to reach the spot.
  • Plan for a clear path for watering and care.

Digging the Planting Hole

When it is time to plant, dig the hole about twice as wide as the root ball. Dig it only as deep as the palm was grown. Never bury the trunk. Burying the trunk can cause problems over time. Backfill with a soil and gravel mix, and pack out any air pockets. Build a soil dam around the edge so water stays in the root zone. Soak the palm fully after planting so the soil settles around the roots.

Watering the First Two Weeks

New palms need steady moisture while they settle in. Water daily or every other day for the first two weeks. Check the soil by hand before each watering. It should feel damp, not soggy. Adjust the schedule to match rain and weather. Consistent care in the first weeks gives the palm the best start.

Feeding and Long-Term Care

Feed your palm in spring, summer, and early fall with a slow-release fertilizer. Look for a product that includes manganese, magnesium, potassium, iron, and copper sulfates. Follow the label directions for the amount and timing. Feeding on a schedule supports healthy growth and steady color in the crown. Once the palm is established, its care becomes simpler, but it still benefits from a regular routine.

Delivery and Timing

Every order can be delivered. The crew root-wraps each palm in the field, lifts it with a loader, and loads it onto a trailer or flatbed. Delivery price is not published, so call with your planting address and we will provide a quote. Plant as soon as possible after delivery. If planting must wait, keep the root wrap on and set the palm in a shady, well-ventilated spot until you are ready.
